Principal's welcome message...2012

It gives me great pleasure, as Principal of Banksia Park School R-7, to welcome you to our school’s website.  This website has been developed to enable parents, students, and visitors to the site, to become familiar with our school, its policies, and other procedures that are essential for the smooth functioning of our school, as well as to provide you with updated school news, schedules and events

Our school's motto "Learning for Life - Pathways to Excellence" is central to our school programs and focus on improvement. We have a strong and ongoing focus on literacy and numeracy with successes reflected in both the national and local testing programs.

At the beginning of 2010, staff, governing council and our parent group, identified that our main improvement priority would be ... ‘Improving student achievements in literacy and numeracy through a focus on comprehension and ICT’. An important part of achieving our improvement priority is ensuring this it is a central focus to our staff learning and inquiry throughout the year.

Why comprehension and ICT?

Learners in the 21st Century have increasing need for comprehension skills both as independent learners and to succeed in educational settings. As utilisers of online technologies, there has never been a more important time to be able to read, critically question and synthesise, and communicate all types of information.

Analysis of data at both the regional level and school level indicates that learners’ achievement in reading could be greatly improved. All teachers in our school R-7, will be working on improving reading outcomes for our students by incorporating varied comprehension skills and strategies into their practice. We will keep you informed about our learning and progress in this area throughout the year.

Other key programs in our school include an emerging school and community ethos towards environmental sustainability with development of a community garden, installation of rain water tanks, solar panels and a newspaper recycling program.

specialist subjects develop skills and values in the are as of German, the Arts and developing positive lifelong attitudes to Physical Education.

One of the most outstanding qualities at Banksia Park School R-7 , that  continually impresses me, is the positive connections between students, parents, staff and the community. Overwhelmingly the feedback I receive from students and parents is positive and appreciative, particularly around the quality of teaching & learning programs and the happiness of children (and parents) within the school.

Banksia Park School R-7 is a truly wonderful environment to learn and work. I welcome you all to browse the website and discover more...

Kindest regards

Jan Carey
